These are the best places in Berlin (for coffee, food and drinks)

Berlin is a city that I've called "home" in the past, and a city that I'm also visiting multiple times per year.

And every time I visit, I'm trying to walk around all the familiar areas and streets and see what's changed: Any new "neighborhood vibe" coffeeshop? Any good street food place? A cool new place for drinks?

From all those the places, I've gathered those that I've liked the most, into a list of the best: the ones that combine a good product, good ambience and (for Berlin standards...) good service.

So, here my favourite places in Berlin (in a list that I'll try to keep up-to-date).

Coffee

Concierge Coffee

Concierge Coffee

A super small place in Kreuzberg, that makes consistently good coffee.

There's only a very small place to sit inside, which can be ok for a quick stop.

But on good days, you might find some small tables in the outside area, on the front of the building.

They also have some tasty sweets, like croissants.

I like this place for a nice start to my mornings, when I pass by that area.

Kajumi

A very welcoming coffeeshops in my favorite area in Berlin. Unfortunately, not a lot of space inside or very comfortable seating, but it's fine to relax for a bit, and maybe read a book or your newspaper.

The place really has a "kiez" feeling. Like, a very "local" clientele.

The coffee is top tier and the people working there have a nice vibe.

nothing out of the ordinary

A small and very minimal coffee shop near Boxhagener platz, that makes good coffee AND stays open until late, which is super rare for coffee shops in the area.

If you choose the later hours, you can also enjoy a glass of wine. Last time I was there, the music playing was perfect to relax and it had a very cozy feeling inside (especially since outside was super cold).

The Barn Café Potsdamer Platz

This and the other nearby Barn, are simply the best places to have coffee in the Potsdamer Platz area.

In my opinion, The Barn is the best coffee roaster in the world. Now, the coffee you're going to have in their shops is going to be usually great, and sometimes "ok..." (in relation the expensive price), because it also depends on the barista.

But you sure can't usually go wrong with it.

Their almond cake is also iconic by now.

THE BARN Ku'damm

THE BARN Ku'damm

For me, the Barn continues to be the pinnacle of the Berlin "hipster" coffee shop. And this new location is basically everything that the Barn does well, distilled to its essence.

For the basics:

  • The location is excellent, in absolute central Ku'damm, in a side street between two buildings. So, touristy area but in a nice spot.
  • The shop is big and airy, with a nice minimal design.
  • The tables are on the verge between uncomfortable and alright, as expected with Berlin coffee shops. But definitely workable for 30 relaxing minutes with a book, and some people watching outside.
  • The coffee, as usual, is excellent. For me, the Barn is the only place that I'm consistently having amazing coffee.
  • The people working there (December 2024) were pretty friendly.

Of course, the coffee can also feel pricy to a lot of people, but for me it's worth it, most of the times.

The almond-chocolate cake is an all time classic, to go with your flat white.

So, now, about some history: The Barn used to have a shop at the nearby Kranzler Eck building, the one with the weird circular roof.

It was an interesting Barn and had a nice view, but its style was almost "off-brand" and it used to be very uncomfortable to sit at (inside).

Now that they moved to this new location, I think that it's almost only a positive thing.

Food

Chen’s Beef Noodles House 陈记牛肉面馆 Kreuzberg

Chen’s Beef Noodles House 陈记牛肉面馆 Kreuzberg

Tasty, hand-pulled Chinese noodles in Kottbusser Tor.

This is a relatively new spot. There are two floors inside, with the upper one being a little bit more private, but the feeling is more of a "fast" place to sit and eat, rather than one to relax for long.

The food was pretty tasty and the prices seemed ok to me, especially in comparison with other "famous" noodle shops. I liked the spicy sauce that you could also add to your dish.

The service was also good and polite. Perfect place for a quick bit after walking in the cold streets of Kreuzberg in winter.

Five Guys Berlin Ku'Damm

Although "Five Guys" is an American, global burger chain, I have to say, I've never had a bad burger there. On the contrary, their burgers are some of the best you can find in Berlin. (And I also like the "unlimited" free penuts you can have while waiting for your order - and the refillable coke).

The only negative is that it's a bit expensive. But stil, it's worth it every once in a while.

Niko Izakaya

Niko Izakaya

Phenomenal.

Everything tasted amazing. The ambiance is as authentic as you can get for an izakaya in Berlin. All people working there are Japanese and super friendly. There's a good selection of Sake bottles.

Highlight for me was the pressed sushi with the seared mackerel.

I'm already planning my next visit.

Drinks

Bar Milano

Nice Italian bar near Rosenthaller platz, just outside the U-Bahn entrance. They make a fine Negroni and sometimes they bring you some tasty bruschettas along with your drink.

The place has been open for many years, and it's something of a staple in the area, which (surprisingly) doesn't have many obvious/easy choices for a quick drink.

BRLO Brwhouse

Brlo is a brewery from Berlin that was founded around 10 years ago, and this is their big, flagship store.

It's a big place, with most of it being an outdoor beer garden, very suitable for spring, summer and early autumn. But even in winter, there's the inside area, that also server a full-on restaurant menu.

It can be a great place also for a group gathering.

Holzmarkt 25

Holzmarkt is a multi-functional area situated on the banks of river Spree, bordering both Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg.

There are multiple shops and restaurants, and a lot of outdoor tables to sit, grab a pizza and a beer, and enjoy the view of the river. So, perfect for a chill Sunday with good weather.

At Christmas, you can also find a very nice Christmas market there.

The Dorothy Bar

Cozy bar near the "water tower" area.

Good cocktails and very nice ambience. The "room" of the shop is a few steps deeper than the street-level and, I don't know, this gives an even cozier feeling to it, like "diving" a bit into it.

I really like visiting it at nights when the area outside is a bit quiet, to relax inside and have some nice drinks.

Straßenbräu

This is the place that you're going to enter and you're going to smell the beer yeast in the air. It really smells like "beer production" in there, and that's an experience by itself.

Their beer is totally fresh and great, and you can find many styles of beer, both of their production and from other breweries.

The store is located near Friedrihshain's Ostbahnhof. The ambience is mostly quiet and the service is nice. The prices a little expensive, but that's expected for a beer of its quality
